[00:00] Hi. My name is Davy McCray. I studied human services and sociology with a minor in women,
[00:13] gender and sexuality in college. But beyond what I've learned in school, I know a lot more
[00:21] people I've known personally. I've known many survivors over the years and
[00:31] they have to, most of them have two main things in common. One is that they have
[00:41] ongoing mental health issues that I can tell just from interacting
[00:50] with them. A lot of them have ongoing depression and self-esteem problems, even if it's years
[00:59] after it happened. And the other thing most of them have in common is that they got very
[01:07] little if any justice. One of my closest friends, Ow, Ow was told by a district attorney that
[01:23] no one would believe her because she wasn't the perfect victim. I've also known people
[01:32] who got a restraining order but no justice beyond that, and I was actively trying to help keep
[01:42] people safe from an abuser who had hurt many people in Cortland, gotten away with it and had
[01:51] come to Ithaca and started doing the same thing here. I always learned that the whole
[02:00] point of the criminal justice system was that the punishment was supposed to fit the crime,
[02:07] and when the crime affected its victim for years, sometimes decades after it was committed,
[02:19] it completely doesn't fit the crime if the punishment is a restraining or
[02:27] Erder with nothing else or or only a few months in jail or or having to write an essay
[02:39] We need to do better and that's why I'm expressing support for the resolution to
[02:46] and for an independent investigation into the practices of this DA's office
