[00:02] Calling myself Jane and as I look around the chamber I notice how few women have
[00:08] come out here in support of this and I imagine some of them are afraid of a
[00:16] repercussion for standing, sitting, speaking out on an issue that has
[00:22] plagued us since the beginning. I want to speak to a broader context of our
[00:32] present situation. I identify as a Jane Doe. I have been chased across my college
[00:39] campus. My dorm was broken into by another guy and he tried to get at me but
[00:45] my RA caught him and stuck him outside. My orthodontist when I was 13 would sit
[00:53] on my chair and rub my little chest with his forearm while he was working on
[00:57] my teeth. A landlord tried to break into my apartment on Christmas Eve. I've been
[01:08] grabbed, stalked, groped, every woman you know has this many stories or more. I was
[01:16] raised with the adage that if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything.
[01:20] Well that really didn't work for me. I have a lot of privilege. I'm white, I'm
[01:26] I'm cis, I own my own home, I'm well educated, but I am lacking a privilege of being a man.
[01:36] The privilege of being a man.
[01:41] Everyone in this chamber knows girls and women whose calm and innocence and body autonomy
[01:46] has been destroyed by a boy or a man.
[01:52] There's literally a war on women in this country.
[01:57] There are approximately 450,000 to 500,000 rapes in this country every year.
[02:04] That's more than the people who have died in the Ukraine-Russian war in three years.
[02:10] That's just the rapes that are reported.
[02:18] It's a matter of our survival that women assume a man is not safe until he proves
[02:24] himself to be safe.
[02:26] I know you're all nice guys, right?
[02:29] But we can't live that way.
[02:31] We can't live that way.
[02:33] Now comes the not nice part, even if you think that wasn't nice.
[02:39] We are angry, we are furious, and we are exhausted.
[02:45] We are at war.
[02:48] We are armed with a righteous sense of justice and truth in a long, long historical memory.
[02:58] Wars have collateral damage.
[03:00] It's my hope that the wrongs here are righted and we can move forward without fear.
