The petition
We, the undersigned, call upon ABC News, CNN, NBC News, CBS News, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and every other legacy media organization reporting on the Lucy Craig / Jane Doe controversy to end selective reporting, abandon preferential treatment of either side, and make the underlying Title IX and other evidence in your possession available to the public.
The public deserves evidence, not carefully curated narratives.
For too long, media organizations have controlled the public conversation by selectively publishing excerpts of documents, quoting unidentified sources, and presenting fragments of information while withholding the broader context necessary for readers to reach their own conclusions.
This practice does not promote informed public discussion. It perpetuates the very media circus that these organizations claim to be reporting on objectively.
When a news organization claims to have obtained police records, investigative files, correspondence, text messages, interviews, Title IX investigative material or other evidence relevant to this controversy, the public should not be expected to accept the organization's interpretation without access to the underlying material.
We are tired of being spoon-fed anonymous sources, selective quotations, and the journalistic equivalent of "trust me, bro" - especially when that information is locked behind a paywall.
News organizations frequently possess discretion to publish lawfully obtained materials without being compelled to withhold them by a court order or other legal restriction. Where publication is lawful and consistent with legitimate privacy and safety protections, editorial gatekeeping should not replace public access to the facts.
We therefore demand that media organizations:
-
Release the underlying evidence. Publish complete, lawfully disclosable source documents, investigative records, relevant communications, and supporting materials relied upon in published reporting, with only necessary redactions.
-
Stop selective disclosure. Do not publish favorable excerpts while withholding material context that could undermine or materially change the interpretation of those excerpts.
-
Apply the same standards to everyone. Accusers, defendants, attorneys, institutions, and other participants should all receive equally rigorous scrutiny, regardless of which narrative is more commercially appealing.
-
End the anonymous-source guessing game. Where source identities must legitimately remain confidential, explain the basis for anonymity, the nature of the source's knowledge, and how significant claims were independently corroborated.
-
Make supporting evidence publicly accessible. When possible, provide source materials outside subscription paywalls so the public can independently evaluate the reporting.
-
Distinguish allegations from established facts. Report contested claims as contested, disclose material inconsistencies, and correct misleading impressions with the same prominence as the original reporting.
Journalism Is Not Supposed to Be a Monopoly on the Truth
Protections must not become a blanket excuse for withholding otherwise publishable evidence while simultaneously profiting from sensationalized coverage of that very evidence.
The public does not need another media organization telling it what to think. It needs the information necessary to think for itself.
This controversy involves serious allegations, equally serious consequences for the people involved, and substantial public interest. That makes accuracy, fairness, context, and transparency more important - not less.
Whether the evidence supports the accuser, the defendants, both in part, or neither in full should be a question answered by the evidence itself, not by which media organization controls its release.
Our Demand Is Simple:
Publish the evidence. Provide the context. Report both sides. Let the public decide.
If legacy media organizations truly believe in transparency, accountability, and the public's right to know, they should demonstrate those commitments through their own editorial practices.
Sign this petition to demand an end to selective media gatekeeping in the Lucy Craig / Jane Doe case.
Transparency is not partisan. Evidence should not depend on which side benefits from its publication.
